The term virtualisation has already achieved buzzword status and has become synonymous with particular manufacturers but it actually has a wider context.
Virtualisation applies to any instance where a device or resource operates in a framework where it is divided and made available to complete multiple executable functions. Users or devices that use multiple functions are able to see virtual resources as a single logical resource.
At a basic level partitioning a hard drive can be classed as virtualisation as it creates two the resources of two drives from a single physical drive. However, the benefits and efficiencies of virtualisation can be applied to whole infrastructures including servers, storage and networking.
